Exploring Different Lens Coatings and Treatments

When it comes to eyeglass lenses , there are many different types of coatings and treatments that can make the lenses better suited for different purposes. From anti-scratch or scratch-resistant coatings to ultraviolet (UV) protection, these coatings and treatments have been designed to help improve vision and protect eyes from the sun's harmful rays. In this blog post, we'll explore the different types of lens coatings and treatments available at Wally's Optical.

Anti-Scratch Coatings

Anti-scratch or scratch-resistant coatings are applied directly to the lens surface after lens fabrication. These coatings reduce the risk of surface scratches on your glasses, which can impair vision quality. The protective coating is usually made from a clear plastic material that bonds with glass surfaces when exposed to heat or light curing systems.

Ultraviolet Protection

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is invisible light emitted from the sun which can be harmful to our eyes if not adequately filtered out. UV rays have wavelengths shorter than visible light and penetrate deeper into eye tissue, leading to age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, pterygia (growths over the iris), skin cancer around the eyes and other problems. Thankfully, lenses coated with a UV filter can block up to 99% of these dangerous rays. At Wally's Optical we offer special lenses with an added layer of advanced UV protection that block both UVA and UVB radiation, so you can trust your vision remains safe while outdoors.

Mirror Coating Lenses

Mirror coating lenses offer a fashionable look as well as improved privacy while outdoors because they reflect light away from your eyes like a mirror does. This type of coating is created by applying several layers of metallic silver particles (or other colors) on top of a tinted base layer but behind a clear protective finish for durability purposes. As such mirror lens coating does not change your vision quality in any way; rather it modifies how much light passes through your glasses and helps you appear more mysterious in certain lighting conditions!

Tinting Lenses

Tinting lenses is another popular treatment for eyeglasses lenses because it allows them to become multidimensional and stylish in addition to providing visual clarity regardless of lighting conditions outside. There are three main types: solid tints, gradient tints, and photochromic/transition tints. Solid tints involve applying a consistent hue throughout the entire lens surface while gradient provides darker shades towards the top graduating lighter down towards the bottom; Lastly photochromic/transition tints turn darker outdoors with exposure to sunlight but return indoors being completely clear again upon reentry!
